ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Tenured and tenure-track assistant, associate, and full professors with an appointment percentage of at least 50% are eligible to apply.

Non-tenure track faculty (NTTF) holding positions of at least 67% annualized, who have also been employed by the university for at least 3 years at the time of application are also eligible to apply.

Faculty who meet any of the following conditions are NOT eligible for the Summer Research Award Program:

1. Visiting, on term-to-term contract, adjunct, research associates, emeritus and retired, or on 12-month contracts;

2. Recipients of a summer research award during the past three years (Summer 2005, Summer 2006, or Summer 2007);

3. Teaching responsibilities impinge on eight consecutive weeks of focused research time;

4. Receive other significant funding during the award period (this can include "start-up" money for new faculty, other UO awards, research funds received by the University, and/or fellowships or awards received by individuals from government or private sources);

5. Resignation from the UO tendered prior to the effective date of the award;

6. Non-tenure track faculty (NTTF) who do not have a contract for the following year;

7. Proposals are related to instructional-related projects, including course development.

INTRODUCTION
(return to top)

A complete application packet will include the following:

1) Completed Application Form.
All materials must be in 12 point font, single or double spaced, margins may not be less than 1" on all sides.

2) Abstract, 100 word limit, must be on a separate page.

3) Proposal narrative, 4-page limit, single or double spaced, 12 point font.

4) Bibliography/Citation list, 1-page limit.

5) Current Curriculum Vitae, 2-page limit.

Applications will be reviewed by the Summer Research Awards Committee, which is comprised of faculty appointed by the University Senate. Please keep in mind that the committee includes faculty from various fields, who may not have specialized knowledge of your field of study, thus the proposal should be written in plain, jargon-free language. The proposal should be addressed to individuals who will evaluate the project not only as an immediate contribution to the advancement of a particular field, but also as a contribution to your development as a researcher, teacher, and interpreter of the specified field of knowledge.

PROPOSAL PREPARATION NOTES (return to top)

All materials must be in 12 point font, single or double spaced, margins may not be less than 1" on all sides.

A. Application Form (choice of Word or PDF)

B. 100 word abstract, on a separate page. The abstract should summarize the proposal's discussion of section C, and provide an easy reference to the proposal, to be used during the selection meeting for committee member and RFD staff.

C. Proposal narrative. The Proposal narrative should contain the following four components and must be within the 4 page limit. It should be in narrative form, illustrated as required, and clearly focused. All illustrations must fit within the 4 page limit. No other attachments will be accepted. Including additional attachments will disqualify your application from review.

1. Conception and definition of the project
Applicants should describe the specific project or research planned for the stipend period, including an explanation of the basic ideas, problems, or questions to be explored; the relationship of the proposed project to immediate and long-range study or research objectives; and the relationship of the applicant's work to other scholarship or creative work in the same general area. If you have received past support for this project, be sure to note how this project differs from the funded project.

2. Significance of the project
Applicants should explain the significance of the proposed work and its anticipated contribution to the state of knowledge or practice in the field in question.

3. Plan of work and methodology
Applicants should outline the plan of work, the methodology being used, and a schedule for the proposed research. Address the following as applicable: What is the present state of the proposed work? What preliminary work or planning (reading, study, and research) has been done for the project? What are the stages to be completed, and what is planned for each stage? Where will the work be conducted? What kinds of data analysis will be done? What performances, products, or other outcomes can be expected? If the project is a book, provide an outline of the chapters and a description of what chapters will be worked on during the award period. If the project has received prior funding, what progress has been made since that time?

4. Possibility for future support
Because Summer Research Awards frequently support critical stages of a research project, they have the potential to increase a faculty member's chances of securing external funding or other research support. The research committee encourages the exploration of other research support. In what way might the proposed summer activity lead to future support? Indicate whether you have done a search for possible sources either independently or through the Office of Research and Faculty Development.

D. Bibliography/Citations. A one page list of references, citations or bibliography.

E. Curriculum Vitae. A two page, current curriculum vitae should include the following four components:

1. the applicant's education, including the title
of any recent theses or dissertations;
2. academic honors, awards, or grants received;
3. employment history;
4. selected list of applicant's published work.

AWARD CONDITIONS (return to top)

The award period for the SRA is eight consecutive weeks an individual devotes to research without any other obligation for which they are receiving significant remuneration (i.e. teaching, external fellowship money, etc.)

Awards are made as summer stipend, research support or a combination of the two. Applicants must clearly state their initial intention for how the award is to be paid on their application cover sheet. Changes are accepted through May 15, 2008.

Awards paid as summer stipend are subject to regular payroll deductions and tax. Other Payroll Expenses (OPE) or fringe benefits are paid by the Office of Research and Faculty Development in addition to the award amount.

Other categories of support available to award recipients include supplies, services and travel. These categories are exempt from all payroll taxes. Travel arrangements and purchases must be made in accordance with UO and OUS regulations and policies.

Please note, the Office of Research and Faculty Development transfers award funds to the faculty member’s department at the beginning of August 2008. Participating faculty are responsible for informing the Office of Research and Faculty Development if the original distribution of funds between summer stipend and research support needs to be changed by May 15th, 2008. It is the responsibility of the home department to disburse the funds and process payment, including but not limited to payroll processing, travel expense forms and requests for reimbursement.

Upon receipt of an award, faculty are expected to sign an agreement outlining their commitment to full-time research for a minimum of eight consecutive weeks during the summer; to work with relevant research compliance offices and committees (i.e. Office for Responsible Conduct of Research, Office for Protection of Human Subjects); to submit a progress report following the award period; to acknowledge the award in any publication resulting from research done during the award period; and to notify the Office of Research and Faculty Development of other support that conflicts with the terms of the SRA.
